The Escapement Zoo
A tour of the escapement family tree: deadbeat, recoil, verge, cylinder, duplex, lever, co-axial, detent — and what each one believes about friction.
Every escapement is a negotiated settlement between two parties: a power train that wants to spin, and an oscillator that wants to be left alone. The family tree below is organized by what each design believes about friction.
The taxonomies that matter
Two axes sort almost everything:
Impulse type. Does the oscillator get its push while the escapement is locked (friction during impulse — lever, cylinder) or while it is effectively free (impulse delivered through a nearly frictionless path — detent, co-axial)?
Detachment. Is the oscillator engaged with the train for the whole swing (recoil, cylinder — always touching) or only for a fleeting moment (detached lever, detent — free to oscillate undisturbed)? Detached escapements win on rate stability because the oscillator spends most of its cycle alone.
The family, roughly in order of appearance
| Escapement | Era | Belief about friction | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verge and foliot | 1300s–1600s | accept it, overpower it | clocks, earliest watches |
| Recoil / deadbeat | 1600s– | recoil is fine (clocks) | tower clocks, regulators |
| Cylinder | 1700s–1800s | minimize contact time | cheap watches, then pocket |
| Duplex | 1700s–1800s | separate lock and impulse | slender pocket watches |
| Swiss lever | 1770–now | detach, impulse briefly | nearly every wristwatch |
| Co-axial | 1974–now | never slide, only push | Omega, mostly |
| Detent / chronometer | 1780s–now | impulse must be free | marine chronometers |
What to read
- For the modern machine, nothing beats the Swiss lever and its geometry page, Drop, Lock, and Lift.
- For the philosophy of eliminating sliding friction, read Co-axial against Detent — two very different answers to the same complaint.
- For the historical arc from tower clocks to wrists, start with Verge and foliot and end on the comparison table.
One more distinction worth internalizing: an escapement can be accurate, robust, or cheap to make, and no design has ever been all three. The compared page scores the candidates openly.
